February 1 3 Key West to Marquesa Keys to Boca Grande and Back to Key West 29 9 15 8 and 17 5 Miles Respectively

Everyone says the Marquesa Keys are about 20 miles from Key West, but our route measured at 29.9. On the way, once out of the channel, we enjoyed about 25 knots of wind on our port quarter (20 knots of apparent wind) which filled our Genoa nicely. No need for the mainsail -- too much wind and plenty of time for the short passage. Part of the longer distance was going north on the east side of Fleming Key (a naval air reserve without a landing strip) and down south again on its west side, 1.8 miles each way, under power. 
Marquesas Keys looks a bit like a roundish South Pacific atoll (think Bikini before we atomized it), except it is mangroves instead of palms. It is large, four miles from NE to SW, and Mooney Harbor, in the middle, is too shallow for ILENE, though we did see two small power boats in there. This picture refused to rotate; North is the right side.


We had planned to anchor to the west side of Mooney Harbor Key, the tiny dot on the south side toward the west. The chart says it is only three feet deep on the approach from the south, but Alex had assured us, with a confirming visual from Google Earth, that there is a minimum of six feet of depth to the anchorage. But the 25 knots of wind was from the ESE, which kicked up five foot waves that left us no margin for error; they would have pounded us onto the coral on the way in if we were not perfect. I would love to try Alexs recommendation on a calm day when you can slowly hunt your way in -- and back out if there is a problem. So we continued a couple of miles west of the location then a couple of miles north and finally east and anchored at the spot indicated by the divider point at the top of the picture.

Going in, our Raymarine chart plotter was worthless. Its largest scale was six miles, showing not nearly enough detail to cut around the un-buoyed  shallow spots. So Lene manned the iPad, with its InavX  program which shows our location and a yellow line showing our course over the ground. "About ten degrees right, " she coached me, and we got in fine and anchored in 12 feet with 80 feet of snubbed chain and her phones anchor alarm, just in case. Such anchor alarms are rather worthless in a crowded anchorage like in Marathon where we are only 15 yards from the boat behind us. By the time you hear the beep, it is too late to take corrective action. But we have miles of open water behind us here and if we started to drag we would have time to fix the problem. Our anchoring detail ran into a snag which we solved with many whacks of the boats hammers, first the rubber mallet and then the metal one. Last time we raised, at Marathon, I accidentally stepped on the "up" button causing the windlass to jam the anchor up into its housing. There was lots of room and time here for the whacking process which eventually freed the anchor.
The only other sailboat here was about a mile north of us, behind the most southern Island in the atolls west wall. So we had "our" island all to ourselves. A tropical paradise except with this wind, though we are partially shielded from it b y the island, dinghy adventures were too fraught for us.
The waves here were less than at the unprotected mooring field at Key West.

Specifically, we were at N 24 32.566; W 82 09.946. This is the furthest that we will go and 1063 nautical miles from the Harlem. From now on we will b e heading home. By adding up the mileages of each of the legs from there to here I find that the actual miles traveled to this point are 1676.8 (1928.3 in land miles). Of the 117 days since and including October 8, we have moved the boat only 45 of them, only 38 percent of them, with almost two thirds of our days as lay days. Three of the passages involved one or more overnights, making for only 41 separate passages. I think we are taking it easy, trying to avoid problems with weather and enjoying ourselves.

About 10 miles off the south coast of Grenada in 2011 marks ILENEs southernmost boundary of travel so far. Eastport, Maine marks her furthest northern and eastern destination and we were now at the westernmost point of her range --so far.

Next morning, we had a problem. It was after a nice breakfast and we were cleaning the boat and not paying attention to the fact that the wind had changed direction. When the wind was from the east, we had miles of deep ocean behind us to the west. When they came from the north it was much less. The anchor alarm probably began to sound while the shop vacuum cleaner was roaring. We heard it and got the engine on, but in the course of getting up the anchor we drifted into water that was shallower than our draft. And the wind was pushing us further on. The engine could not get us off, even when we heeled the boat with the jib. We saw a fishing boat and called on VHF radio Channel 16. The  Coast Guard heard our call and responded. They switched us to channel 22A and asked us many questions including our Towboat US towing insurance number. They called Towboat US  "Ranger" for us with their more powerful VHF radio on a high antenna and it was dispatched to us from Key West. In the meantime I lowered the dink and put our port anchor with 20 feet of chain and about 80 of our 280 feet of line in it and motored away, paying out the line and dropped that anchor as a kedge, to try to prevent the waves from pushing us further into shallower water. Lene hailed some fishermen who tried to tow us off but their engine was not powerful enough. We waited with anxious thoughts. We heard a soft thumping when waves lifted us and put us back down on the sand. Not "pounding" but bad enough. When we on shore for the winter, the keel supports the weight of the boat. Four pairs of "jackstands", at the sides, stabilize the boat to prevent it from falling over, but the weight is on the keel. When afloat, all of the weight is supported by the water but here, when a wave lifted us a wee bit and dropped us down again, the thump was transmitted through the keel to the rest of the boat. Not a good thing. 
Chris, master of Towboat US "Ranger" arrived and passed us bridles to attach to each bow cleat to pull us off. He powered his engine but we were not moving -- our speed over ground was still "0.0 knots". I suggested putting up sails to heel the boat (and thus lift the keel,) and when Chris said OK we did so, but we were oriented facing the wind so they did not do much good until Chris twisted our orientation to catch some wind. Eventually we broke loose and I was hauling in the line of our kedge anchor but aftert a while it held fast to the bottom. When we wanted to drag it up, it would not budge in the direction we were going, holding us back. Chris said to cut the line. No way! Then he suggested tying a fender to the line and casting it off and promised to retrieve it for us later. We got all 280 feet of line out on deck with a fender tied along the way.  Chris left us not very far from where we had been, but in 13 feet of water, where we anchored with the starboard anchor, our normal one with all chain rode. He retrieved our port anchor, brought it back and gave me some very handy advice of how to get it reinstalled through its "bail" roller. He checked our rudder for damage and it turned freely. If we had not purchased unlimited towing insurance, this escapade would have cost us $1200. Chris was so helpful and polite. The antithesis of the Towboat US operator at Point Judith, RI, who claimed salvage ($27,000) for a tow in August 2010 -- and lost his case.  Power boaters need towing insurance because if their engines fail they need to be towed back to port. In this case, port was Key West, 29 miles away. But sailors can generally get back to port, we only need to be towed off the sand, mud or rock.


Well that experience soured us a bit on the Marquesas, and we started to head back to Key West, but the wind was light and from the west, and we were not going fast and would have arrived after dark and even though I have passed through the harbor coming and going, I really do not like night arrivals. On our way back, we were passing Boca Grande, and Lene said "Why not stay here for the night?" This island is surrounded by shoals but with a marked channel between them. The large green areas are shoals, less than one foot of water. So it looks like you are in the middle of the ocean.

The shoals do nothing to stop wind but eliminate all the waves which break up on them instead of us. North of us, the channel leads to water than only shallow draft boats can use, less than six feet.
The only problems noted in our cruising guides were a tidal current and sharks, but we did not plan to swim.  So we headed north to and into the channel and anchored right in the channel in 17 feet of water with 90 feet of snubbed chain out between R16 and G15, as shown on the chart.  (The distance from one horizontal line to the next is one mile.)  Around nine pm the tidal current started to run the other way and we swung on our anchor to face the other way. Normally, one should not anchor in a channel but here the book said this channel is so little used, especially at night, that it is all right. We could see no other boats. A nice calm night -- until about three a.m., when howling 20 plus knot winds shook the boat and woke me up. I turned on instruments and went to the cockpit and was not really well oriented yet when I looked at the depth meter and speedometer. we were moving at half a knot and the depth, which had been 17 feet the evening before was now 11 and falling to as little as 7.5. Oh no; Not again." I turned on the engine and tried, while the anchor was still down, to direct us toward where I hoped the deeper water was. The only landmark was the  G15 daymark buoy which I could see only by flashlight.
Eventually I turned the engine off and watched and realized that as the boat was moving around with the freedom that its anchor chain allowed, we were passing back and forth over that 7.5 foot spot, we were not dragging and we were not likely to do so with the winds which were now diminishing. By then I was bone chilled and went back to bed.
In the morning we motor-sailed back to Key West, with only the small jib.
We passed these two cruise boats on our way north into the bight where we tied up to a dock for a few days of touring here. ILENE needs a bath; and we do too. And its Lenes birthday.

More Aluminum Sailing Dinghies

In response to my post about the aluminum Gouget Moth, several readers sent in some aluminum sailing dinghies they have come across.

Australian "R.L". sent two photos of a welded aluminum version of the Australian 11 Aquanaut Dinghy, masterfully crafted.



Mike Scott owned a prototype De Havilland 12 aluminum dinghy during his time in Australia. His story:
"Im not sure who designed that alum dinghy I had, could well have been built as a prototype for the Vagabond, and therefore designed by Alan Payne. They maybe figured that alum was not the best way to go and so built the 3 class boats in glass. The 16ft Corsair is still going strong all over Oz, but the 12ft Vagabond and 10ft Gipsy seem to have faded. When I worked at Miller and Whitworth (Bob Miller and Craig Whitworth, sailmakers, Flying Dutchmen champs, and of course the legendary Bob Miller (aka Ben Lexcen). They became the agents for the 3 classes, and we would place an advertisement in the local paper for Free Sailboat rides, and we would take out prospective customers and then try to sell them a boat....was a fun job, but didnt get to see my kids much....that was 1966. Check out De Havilland Marine. I also worked there - that was where this boat came from. I bought it for scrap value, one of the perks of the job, I guess. In those days I was an accountant - ha...!


In the U.S, Grumman remains the most famous firm for their line of aluminum small boats and canoes but their most enduring aluminum sailboat is their dink, much sought after by the cruising crowd.


Tom Price pointed out that Grumman, in the late 1960s, built a 15 racing dinghy, called the "Flyer." Tom came across it at a Baltimore Boat Show. It doesnt appear many were made as this is the only image I could dig up about this dinghy on the InterWebs.


And finally, the aluminum sailboat I came across at Bobby Mullers yard? After digging around it appears it was the Pelican class, a 12 footer design by Philip Rhodes, of which over a thousand were built by the Aluminum Company of Canada - Alcan. Adding Hull Panels to the Optimist Pram


Adding the hull side panels was pretty straight forward. We hand-planed the chine logs so that they would be level along the bottom of the boat. We used 3/4" stainless steel woods crews from Jamestown Distributors. I set the width for the screw holes by spreading my index and pinky fingers wide apart and making that distance on the chine and stringer attachment points. We used about 50 wood screws per side panel. Liberal amounts of PL Construction Adhesive were applied along the chine and stringers and things went well.

Geezer Racing The Gentlemans Way

The formula:
  1. Get a small two-man dinghy with, and this is important, NO SPINNAKER!
  2. Make sure the wind is light so NO HIKING! (Well, maybe some leaning out is OK.)
  3. Assign one geezer as PORT helmsman and the other as STARBOARD helmsman which eliminates any one person actually crossing the entire boat on tacks
  4. Enjoy whatever the competition brings!

We Are OFF! NY to Annapolis October 8 10 268 Miles

Our first problem was discovered when we had to use the dinghy to go to dinner on City Island because the Clubs launch service ends at 6 pm in the waning days of the season: it started right up but stopped in five seconds. So we paddled.  And the night of the seventh was unpleasantly rocky on the mooring due to strong SW winds kicking up big chop in Eastchester Bay, impeding sleep.

The passage was from 9:45 am on the eighth until 7:30 am on the tenth, 45.75 hours with a two hour "stop" to be discussed later, so 43.75 hours underway. The first of the two days (NYC and the Atlantic coast of New Jersey) was warmer than expected for the season, both day and night, with sunny clear skies and a big full moon; the second of the days (Delaware Bay, the C and D Canal and Chesapeake Bay) was raw and cloudy but not frigid and not rainy. This chart, created by Jims Spot device shows our route, except that it connects the dots every four hours or so and hence cuts off the corners and shows us crossing land. [Image to be added.]
We actually left, after mango pancakes, about an hour too early due to my impatience so we did not experience the favorable tide while we fought strong headwinds until near Hellsgate when the tide started flushing us out of NY Harbor. A tug with four barges (2 x 2) came up behind us near Hellsgate and called ILENE by name to advise that we would apparently be going through Hellsgate together and that his four barges would be swinging to port. I did a short 360 degree loop to let him pass and observed that his tow did indeed sweep far to his port side and "crab" through the most problematic tidal strait of the passage on a diagonal. We passed parallel to the FDR Drive with its snarled traffic on which I drive so often to get to the Club.



Here is the Freedom Tower to the left, currently New Yorks tallest structure, and a tower of the Brooklyn Bridge to the right, which held that title in the 1880s.






We put up sails, starting with double reefed main and small jib, after we passed Governors Island and we were on starboard tack all the way to Cape May, though we gradually shook out the reefs and changed back and forth to the genoa when passing through periods of apparent winds of 20-25 knots and periods where they were in the mid teens. The Verranzano Bridge, our ninth of the passage, was emotionally my last point in New York until around May, 2015.
Unlike the similar passage on Pandora about two weeks before, on which the wind was never forward of the beam, on this trip it was almost never aft of the beam, though rarely close hauled and predominantly about 60 degrees off the bow. 

Jim, who made the trip on both boats is a great man to have aboard. He is a fellow Cornellian, an engineer and very knowledgeable as a sailor though he wears his experts mantle lightly, without a trace of the arrogance that some experts have -- laid back and a pleasure to sail with. He agreed to my request to sleep the earlier part of each night and stand the later night watch.  During our first night I was "racing" a green light that started off our port bow. At times he would get ahead and by changing sails, at times, I would get ahead. Our speed varied from 3.5 to 8.1 knots depending on the wind. When very close I hailed the "sailboat with another sailboat on your port quarter", identified ILENE and thanked him "for keeping me awake last night". He reciprocated the thanks and identified himself as "Momo" a Valiant 40, here shown off  Wildwood,
bound for Florida with a planned stop for a day in Cape May harbor. I told him I hoped we would meet up with them in Florida or along the way. He is a very good sailor because ILENE is a faster boat but he kept up.

Jim took the watch for most of the passage up Delaware Bay, in which we avoided the worst of the adverse tide. Having rounded Cape May at about 9 a.m., using the inside passage a hundred yards off the beach, with main and engine but no headsail, Jim suggested a diagonal course, away from but toward the shipping channel at Miah Maull light, after which we stayed just outside the channel on its right side almost all the way up. A tug with barges ran near adjacent to us most of the way and we put up the headsail when possible to gain speed and sailed without engine, close reaching on port. Unfortunately, when the tug got ahead of us during lighter winds, we got long doses of his diesel fumes. About 5-10 miles before the Canal, when we are slightly ahead of him, I called on VHF and told him our plan to cut across his bow to get to the other side of the channel in anticipation of our left turn into the Canal and he replied "OK".

As we entered the canal Jim came up with the good idea to stop for a couple of hours to avoid the worst of the adverse tidal flow. We would tie up for free at a dock in the Summit North Marina on the north side of the Canal to have dinner in their excellent Aqua Sol Restaurant. And we shared a bottle of red and a nice assortment of appetizers while motoring in the canal. This is the same marina where ILENE spent a night on our last trip in June 2012 and where Pandora went in for fuel two weeks ago. But on our way in, going slowly, of course, we went aground. We used the preventer to swing the boom, with Jim sitting on its end, out to port, in an effort to tilt the boat and break us free. No luck, we were stuck hard. And we created this lead line, the old fashioned depth meter, out of a green divers weight, a wire wrap, a length of light line and red tape to mark where the wet part old the line ended.

Yep, we were stuck alright and it was mud, which you can see,  dried on the bottom of the weight. What to do? Wait for the tide to come in and float us off. I took the watch and two hours later, at about ten, I saw us drift, turned on the engine and woke Jim.  We motored to the inner end of the cul de sac, turned in the deep turning basin and headed out of there.  Then I slept for four hours until 2 a.m. while Jim took us out of the Canal and into the Bay.  I took the watch from 2 until 7:10 a.m., when GPS put us ten minutes from the red daymark guarding Back Bay harbor of Annapolis, where Jim lives with Ann and where we docked at Bert Jabins Marina -- where ILENE had stood on the hard during the winter of 2005 in which we bought her.
Ann came over to take us to breakfast at Grumps, an Annapolis breakfast institution, where no two coffee mugs ever match. But the Captain ordered another batch of pancakes and put Jim to work peeling mangos for the three of us.
Then how to best utilize the time before Lenes arrival at about 4 pm. Well the most critical task was fixing the outboard, the engine of our car. And it being Friday, when mechanics are at work, I searched and found Steve of A and B Yachtsmen, who disassembled the carburetor, cleaned the rust from it, and emptied our fuel tank and line. She runs again! We are across the dock from a beautiful Tayana 55, "Karina"
owned by Dr. Miles (both M.D. and a boat doctor) and Ann, who are leaders in the Caribbean 1500. Ann gave Ilene a lot of good advice about sailing with cats in 2010 and unfortunately their cat has gone to heaven. I introduced myself as a graduate of the 2010 run and he pretended to remember me and invited us to an Alumni reunion we attended that night.

Before that I washed Ilenes salt crust and New York grime and freshened our water supply, cleaned up the interior a bit and took a shower and a nap. Lene and Witty look happy to be here and we got a good nights sleep.

The need of keeping water out of the bilge of a metal boat

I always start my surveys on metal boats by using Thermal Imaging of the hull. This helps me locate the structural components of the metal boat. I am also looking for trapped moisture and/or water. If this is found, then there is a good chance there will be corrosion. Next I conduct an inspection of the bilge of the boat, including, anchor, sail, cockpit lockers, and lazarettes. Now I have a very good idea where to concentrate my UTM-audio gauge. I take readings of the whole hull, but will do more readings in the areas of concern.

When I see water in a bilge of a metal boat beyond what might be in a sump I get concerned. I would like to see dry bilges on all metal boats, but this is not always possible. On Tuesday I surveyed a steel trawler. Overall this boat looked to be in fair condition, but then I saw the water in the bilge, a lot of it! There was heavy scale in some areas because of the standing water.  I knew this was an area I needed to spend some time getting thickness readings.

The next day I did my audio gauge. My readings indicated plate wastage. In some areas I could not get a reading that most likely is caused by heavy scale. My visual inspection from inside confirmed the heavy scale. When I arrived at the boat I noticed some weeping from what I hoped was paint blisters. Then an hour later water stared streaming from one of the blisters. Just to think only the paint was holding this section of plate together.

The good news! The boat was out of the water it will not sink. Steel boats can fixed; by cropping out the bad plate and adding new. In a short period of time, she will be underway again.

The moral of this story? If you own a metal boat keep an eye on the bilges.

HYC Cruise Day 16 August 9 Northport LI to City Island NY 25 6 Miles

It seemed that todays would be like the prior passage, with wind on the quarter. And so it was, except that the wind was lighter so we had the motor on the whole way, with the wind adding half a knot at times. We could have sailed without the engine, but at three knots for the 25.6 miles, well you can do the math. North Star left shortly before ILENEs 10:15 departure and Sangaris, shortly after we did. We hugged the LI sides green buoys while Sangaris gave them a very wide berth and pulled away from us. I did not see No News, but hope they too got home safely. The only excitement of the day was the radio chatter on VHF Channel 16 about a helicopter rescue from a boat that was taking on water near Sandy Hook. We got on our mooring at about 3:15.

The entire sixteen days was blessed with dry weather, except for a few sprinkles in port, at night.  And for the power boaters, the light winds were a boon, though not for sailors. still, we were spared stormy winds which in past cruises have persuaded some captains to avert from the itinerary for a day, waiting calmer weather. I recall one cruise when we all looked at the weather in Shelter Island, saw a hurricane coming and completely diverted from the plan to make for the hurricane hole of Hamburg Cove in the Connecticut River, just a bit north of Essex, where took a non-scheduled lay day while the storm roared. So we had great weather and good tides. Thanks again, Bruce, for planning such a good cruise.

All told, nine Harlem boats bearing eleven Harlem families participated in the cruise by boat for one or more days at the beginning, middle or end. An additional four Harlem families visited the cruise by land bringing the total to fifteen participating Harlem families. Of those fifteen, seven had a member who was a Past Commodore. (Not me, I hasten to add!). The PCs, who have so selflessly devoted themselves to our Club, seen to know something about the pleasures of cruising that some of the rest of us have not yet learned.
